Welcome! Welcome! Happy Hunger Games
and
may the Odds Be Ever in your Favour!
Seventy-four years ago, the thirteen districts rebelled against the Capitol. Together they stood strong, but when Dristrict 13 was obliterated by the Capitol, resistance was impossible, as District 13 was the true force behind the rebellion. The remaining districts submitted to the Capitol and lost their hope for change. Every year since the rebellion, for 74 years, the Capitol forced 24 children ages 12 to 18 into an arena to fight to the death and used hidden cameras to televise the events in order entertain the Capitol citizens and to remind the 12 districts that they are under the Catitols control. In the games only one tribute can win.
Every year, each district holds a reaping ceremony which is a "celebration" for all districts. Two large glass bowls contain folded slips of paper with each child's name on it. A child's name is entered each year for every year that they are eligible. By the time each child is 18, they must have a minimum of 7 entries in the glass ball. They (the people in the districts) can choose to add their name more times in exchange for tessera, which is a small sack of grain and some oil. Each tessera has enough oil and grain to supply one family member with food for one year. The district's representative picks a name out of the glass bowls, one which is for girls and one for boys. Ladies always get chosen first. The names who that are chosen are then entered into the Games, unless someone is willing to volunteer which normally happens in the "Career Districts" (1,2 and 4). Career Districts where children have been training their whole lives to enter and hopefully win the Games. For the Career Districts it is an honor and a privilege to be entered into the Hunger Games.
